DA POET TIM JACKSON:
"I'M PERFECT"
NC spoken word artist talks about his
inspiration and why he is the perfect man
NC's own Da Poet Tim Jackson
(April 30) Local indie artists performed in front of a room of Hip Hop enthusiasts and
those wanting to increase the awareness of Sickle Cell Anemia (read about the event
here). Individual musicians and groups hit the stage performing any and everything
ranging from original pieces to today’s hottest jams. In comes Da Poet Tim Jackson.
The audience glares as a man of slim build and dreads that cascaded down his back
echoes into the mic for their undivided attention. And then he spoke and the walls
trembled. Those who were wrapped into their own conversations could not help but to
listen as Jackson captivated the crowd with his passionate vents on today’s society.
Like most, Da Poet Tim Jackson started writing at a young age but it wasn’t until 1998
that through the encouragement of a friend that the college graduate shared his love for
words in front of an audience of attentive listeners on an open mic night. He tells BSL
about his first encounter with a fan:
"A little old lady appeared out of the crowd in front of me and she was like you have
something really major that I needed to keep doing and the people needed. Because it
was an elder, it was Wow! If an elder said it, it must be true. I didn’t know I had a gift.
Since then, I continued to do it and people would tell me how moving it is."
For anyone that has heard his spoken word whether in person or through his Myspace
page, knows that the Durham, NC resident speaks on topics that may not be
comfortable for others to speak on. One in particular that caught my attention was,
Through Closed Eyes, which he wrote when he had a son on the way and was thinking
of what he wanted to instill in him as a young Black man growing up in this society. “Faith
is something you can see with your eyes closed.”
