THE BLACK SPOTLIGHT
Shining A Light on African American Entertainment & Culture
(June 20) Blessed with the swagger of Jay, the lyrical skills of Doug E Fresh and the charisma
of Kanye, Da Public's Eye will be a solid entity in the music industry.
By staying true to and showing love for his hometown of Maxton, NC, he is revered as a
superstar amongst his peers. With tracks like the old school feel of Justify and the spiritual-
inspired I Don't Wanna Be Here, Da Public's Eye (real name: Jason Stanley) is changing the
sound of Hip Hop but in a good way.
The Black Spotlight (BSL) speaks with the now Atlanta resident, Da Public's Eye (DPE) about
his NC roots, his musical influences and who he considers to be the best MCs out now.
BSL Where did the name Da Public's Eye come from?
DPE It was something that just came about. It's not a bragging thing. It's more of a personal thing.
It's from being in the public a lot and always attracting attention without even trying. When doing
music and everybody seeing you and knowing who you are, you're in the public's eye.
BSL Growing up, who were some of your musical influences?
DPE My mother, church, My brother Mic-GOD from NSP (North Star Production), and Jonathan
Baker from KingsTimez Music!
BSL How do you believe your NC roots have influenced your music?
DPE Well my roots are from Maxton and that town just so happens to be located in NC. I never
knew anything else until later in life! But I will say that growing up in a street advanced, small
town has prepared me for what was in store once I reached out to the state of NC. And the rest
of the state gave me my confidence, because they don't support local artist that are not
established yet. They would rather pay money to see someone that they see on TV all day
everyday, hear on the radio all day everyday and can care less about you and your community
then to help build an artist of their own kind that supports them and their struggles more than
they support him/her!
BSL With the competition being as tight as it is, what was that factor that made you
decide to enter the entertainment field?
DPE To loosen up the opportunity for a real artist with real talent to get noticed! It take a great
deal of energy to move the masses and with the way the entertainment field shape-shifted to
the "no talent money magnet artist style," it makes it hard for those who showcase real talent to
get noticed without some sort of gimmick!
