INTERVIEW: ACTOR/COMEDIAN KEVIN HART cont...
What made you go from I’ll gonna be funny for my family & friends to I want to wanting
to do this for a living?
I’ve always wanted to be in entertainment. I would play around in school. When I decided to take
it serious was once I figured out that I was a likeable asshole (laughs) I guess that’s a good way
to say it. I decided to take a shot at it. I fell in love with it. My family was supportive. I said I
wanted to do this for the rest of my life.
I just heard your show when you were on the Foxxhole. I must say, you really held
your own. The entire show was hilarious.
(laughs) Oh, that was snapping! That was just us talking about each other all day. Jamie [Foxx]
is a good friend of mine so I show him support whenever I can. The Foxxhole was definitely an
experience.
Has there ever been a time when you were on stage and you were expecting this huge
pop but instead you heard crickets?
That was in 1998 with the first show I was involved in at this place called the “40 Comfort Zone.”
A guy hit me in the head with a piece of chicken! He was so annoyed with my jokes that he
decided to throw food at me. I wanted to do something but he was a big dude so I let it go. I tried
to calm the audience down but they still booed me. It was pretty bad. I will never forget that one.
Are you serious? Was it an actual piece of chicken or was it a bone?
It was half a chicken. He was probably in the middle of his bite and realized how disgusted he
was with my performance and he decided not to finish that piece and he threw it at me!
Some may consider you an overnight success because it seemed like you popped out
of nowhere. How many years lapsed from the first time you stepped in front of an
audience to pursuing a career in acting?
I’ve been in the entertainment industry for seven years now. I’m 28 now so I’ve been doing this
for a long time. I’m definitely not an overnight success. I’ve been in the right position at the right
time for the right people to see me. When it was time for me to do television, I was ready and it
brought on bigger opportunities. Now that I’ve gotten those opportunities, I’m trying to get more.
The parts have gotten bigger and I hope to continue to be in the right position.
You are in a great position right now. Despite the jokes about Soul Plane, how many
can say that they have landed a lead role in a film and has written and produced their
own show? You are a great entertainer and you are consistently working so I definitely
want to commend you on that.
Thank you.
Since coming into Hollywood, what has been the biggest challenge for you so far?
