WHAT IS YOUR
DEFINITION OF A
REAL MAN?

BSL asked the question and you
gave me an answer
(June 21) TheBlackSpotlight.com asked the question, "What is your definition of a real man"
and the feedback was remarkable. CEOs, writers, music artists and more reveal what they
believe are the elements of a real man.

If you need to know if you are dealing with a real man upon meeting him, check out these
responses...

Through a never ending journey called eternal life. My desire and sometimes compass on
this unpredictable road ahead should help answer your question as well. "To be a man of
God's. A friend of God's. A Husband of God's and a Father of God's". In that order.

My definition of a real man, is compassionate, nurturing, honest, dignified, strong, emotional,
vulnerable yet available, intelligent on many levels, loves children and animals ...God fearing....
and financially saavy, you know what I mean!

In my book on page 268 I explain my definition of a man - ...most people think gay black men
are not masculine men. Many think being gay means you are less than a man. You are not
macho or hard. Gay men are soft and weak. When in actuality being macho or hard doesn't
make you a man. It's being responsible, having integrity, and being a man of your word. It's
being a part of your community, giving back, and helping those in need. Being a man is not
about how much p*ssy you can get and how many women you womanize, it's about respect
and support. It's about loving one another and loving yourself." I Am A Man!

Industry from Music to Hollywood
" (Atria/Simon & Schuster)

A real man is one that has a mature mind, clear goals, and doesn't mind being open about
his thoughts, ideas and dreams. A man that is progressive, ambitious, and doesn't make
excuses on why things aren't happening for him. He'll know how to communicate, how to love,
and how to make bad things work out for his good. A real man doesn't come with age, it
comes with great trial and perseverance THROUGH those trials.

A real man is confident about his identity, beliefs, and ethics. He has courage to
acknowledge and to transform his weaknesses into strengths, at every level of his existence.
A real man practices conviction with faith and seeks wisdom and understanding. He realizes
that life requires diplomancy, compromise, gratitude, and compassion. A real man accepts
his Divine position as the head  but recognizes and cooperates when it is best to follow.

When a male accepts, and takes responsibility for his actions, stays true to his word,
provides for and protects his family, and is willing to fight and die for what he believes in!

To me a real man is someone who takes care of his responsibilities without being forced.
Someone who is loyal to friends and family. Also, someone who knows how to treat a woman
like a woman and not a b*tch or hoe. A real man respects, cherishes and protects sisters.

A real man is one who takes accountability for his actions whether they are right or wrong.
You’re responsible for your actions. You take care of what you need to take care of whether it
is for your family or being a stand-up person in your community. A real man is a role model.
You should live your life in order to be that positive example for people to follow. You might
have a guy who will go home and smoke some weed but tell kids that drugs are bad. That
doesn’t make sense. Live by example and that’s what a real man does.
-Troy Whitehurst, Filmmaker/CEO of Skeebo Films (Black Spotlight Interview)

A man that is willing to go far and beyond to take care of his responsibilities; however, not
putting himself in harms way to do it.  You can’t take care of your family if you’re locked up or
dead.  I believe a real man has a sense of loyalty.

GOD and he made me in his image. He made me just like him! So no matter the character a
man plays through out this role called life knows that he is real. Understand, it's not money,
material things nor the less amount of mistakes you made that makes you a real man. But to
remain who you are and stay true to yourself in any situation makes you real. Not how
gangster you are or how much money you getting and not even if you provide for your family,
or have a PhD makes you real.  It may be icing on a cake and that's great but that don't make
you a real man!
