HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES
FOR A DELICIOUS COOKOUT

Cutting calories without skipping a
beat

By Crystal Myrick
(June 29) The summer is here. The temperature is rising and you know what that means:
Cookouts. Sometimes the mindset tells us that we can pig out and pick up where we left off on
our diet the next day. You know the brain trickery. I'll work out for 10 minutes later tomorrow. As
tempting as it is, you may pay for it later.

Here are some eight easy, couldn't be simpler healthy alternatives for your cookout outing.

Eat breakfast Well, duh! Maybe to you but others may be too overly eager to skip breakfast to
stuff their faces later. Eat a nice hearty breakfast to get your day started right

Ditch the carbonated drinks Water is not only healthier but hydrates your body a lot better
than sodas.

Hold the ketchup please As much as a hot dog may taste better heavily coated and dripping
in the red substance, the salt intake can be harmful. If you must use it, a very small amount is
best.

Get the chip off your shoulder What is a cookout without the snacks? Chips is always a
popular choice for once again, there's the salt presence. Substitute your regular snacks with
baked or low-sodium alternatives. Or even better, cancel the chips all together and save some
fruit and yogurt in the cooler. It's filling and you get your sweet treat.

Replace bread with lettuce If you have a low-carb eating style, drop the bread and wrap your
burger in a nice, clean and crisp piece of Iceberg. Slap a slice of tomato inside your lettuce wrap
with a squirt of mustard and you are good to go.

Go for the green Athletes may going for the gold but to keep your healthy habits, go for the
green. Pasta salad and macaroni and cheese can be found at most cookouts but you don't have
to eat it. Eat a green salad instead.

It's hot out here dog! It's no secret that hot dogs are high in sodium. Hop to the low-sodium
versions or dare I say, the veggie dogs! Try it. You might like it.

Crank up the music Burn off a few extra calories and practice the latest dance moves or bring
back the old ones.
Soul Train line anyone?

In summary, cut the salt, drink plenty of water and eat in moderation. Simple right?

So, you think you can't live without your salty snacks or your uncle's sauce-drenched ribs? Well,
at least you will be living.
