(February 1) When it comes down to victims to such health conditions as diabetes,
hypertension and other preventable diseases, African American men and women are at the
top of the list each time. Before now, there has not been a true guide that addressed the
matters in a straightforward manner that focused solely on Blacks.
In comes Makeisha Lee, health expert and author of the new controversially titled guide, Why
Black People Can’t Lose Weight. Lee uses her years of research in various aspects of health
to address these issues without an ounce of sugar coating. Lee became inspired to help and
educate others about her findings through various articles after the passing of her
grandmother, who was considerably obese.
The Black Spotlight speaks with health expert/author Makeisha Lee about her new book,
people who make New Years resolutions and where she crosses the line between being thick
and being fat.
What was the reason behind titling your book, Why Black People Can’t Lose Weight?
The reason I titled it as such is because through my consultations with people who are trying
to get on track with their health and help them reach their goals, they say, “I can’t lose weight
because I’ve had so many babies or I can’t lose weight because I can’t stop eating.” These
are the type of things that we as Blacks are conversing about and I know that from my
background, these are not legitimate reasons. I knew the title would arrest people’s attention
and would get to the real root of the problem.
