(February 10) This year’s Grammys should have been nicknamed the Night of Collaborations
& Surprises. From jaw-dropping wins and phenomenal performances, The Black Spotlight lists
its best moments of the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.

Two Performances are Better Than One
This year’s best selling artist graced the stage not once, but twice. Alicia Keys opened the
show appearing beside the late Frank Sinatra on a big display screen, singing his classic hit,
Learnin’ the Blues. She returned later in the show to perform her number one hit, No One from
her latest album and was accompanied by guitarist and soft rocker John Mayer. In between
performances, she snagged up awards for Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal
Performance. Whenever Keys performs, her piano is always by her side, making her one of
the most talented performers out today and possibly in history.

Kanye West’s Illuminating Performance
Possibly seeing him for the first time since his mother’s passing and his breakdown during an
overseas performance, West’s set was not short of pyro, crazy special effects and scrolling
display jacket and his now trademark glasses. He steps on stage to perform his chart-topper
Stronger but it was his track, Hey Mama that touched everyone in attendance and at home.

Tina & Beyonce Makes Mary Proud
Bring together two of the hottest divas from the past and present and you got the Tina Turner
and Beyonce duet. The Irreplaceable singer did a commendable job at acknowledging the
greats that came before her (i.e. Aretha, Ella, Whitney) At least 30 years in between their ages,
Turner showed why she was in the innovator and that she can still outperform these 20-
something-year olds.

Herbie Hancock wins Album of the Year
West and Winehouse had been scooping up awards left and right but when it came to Album
of the Year, their wins came to a halt when jazz legend Herbie Hancock scored the honorable
Album of the Year. Also beating out country star Vince Gill and rock band, the Foo Fighters, it
was his album, River: The Joni’s Letters that satisfied the masses. Hancock also won for Best
Contemporary Jazz Album.

Winehouse Sings Understandable Lyrics
In fear that her return to the stage would be a déjà vu Brit-Brit MTV moment, viewers at home
and in attendance at the Staple and in London awaited what would happen with the Rehab
singer. After witnessing past performances within the last six months of incoherent lyrics and
glazed over stares, it was refreshing to see the lively (maybe too lively) singer/songwriter
appear alert and very entertaining. And the look after she won Record of the Year was truly
priceless. Winehouse was the biggest winner of the night securing five awards including Best
New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
