CELEBRATING THE
LIFE OF MARTIN
LUTHER KING, JR.

The Black Spotlight Shines A
Light on One of the Greatest Men
That Ever Lived
(April 3) It will be 40 years ago tomorrow that the greatest pioneer of all time was
assassinated on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. It was on that day that
African Americans lost their hero. King was the one man who stood for equal rights for ALL,
not some and believed that his nonviolent approach was the only valid solution. Sadly, it was
the opposite that caused him not to be here today.

I wasn't born until a little over 15 years after his death but it is amazing that over nearly three
decades after his "I Have A Dream" speech that the words are still incredibly moving and the
passion he felt behind it.

There has been those that have imitated his way with the public but there has not been a
single activist since Dr. King's departure that can motivate and inspire a group of people like
he could. Today when violent crimes committed are at a all-time high and racial
discrimination is still alive and lurking, Dr. King set the stepping stone for we, as a people to
do as the old hymn states and that we shall overcome these barriers that are separating us.

And how do we do so? We can begin by:

Utilizing our resources. Whether you are just graduating from high school and have been
out of school for a minute, further your education.
Intelligence is the greatest tool known to
man and with it, we can build empires.

Supporting our own.
Yes, I know this sounds very contradictory to what I said earlier but let
me explain. If we become cured of the "crabs in a barrel" syndrome, then (and only then) will
we be able to grow as a community and no longer be viewed as the underdogs. Shop at
Black-owned businesses, donate to Black charities and always, ALWAYS be on your "A"
game when it comes to handling financial matters.

So, on April 4th, let's remember the man, the change, the KING!
