(February 14) For those who continued to watch one of the only predominantly black sitcoms
left on television were informed that last Monday's episode was the finale. This may not be so.
Sources are saying now that the show may go on but this will probably be the last season.
Girlfriends, which debuted September 11, 2000 on the former network, UPN, followed the lives
of four different women (played by Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White and Jill
Marie Jones) and the bond they shared. From the beginning, the show received high ratings
but after one of their key players left the show (Jones), the ratings plummeted but continued for
two more seasons.
Rumors are circulating the Net that Jones may be returning for the series finale as the over the
top Toni Childs. That would certainly bring back the viewers that the now "dramedy" lost in the
past.
Fans may now learn the outcome of their favorite characters especially whether or not if Joan
Clayton (played by Ross, who has been on the show since day one) would finally get married
and what type of father her best friend, William Dent (played by Reginald C. Hayes) will
become.
Girlfriends would not the first long-running black sitcom to not get an official finale. In 1999, the
Wayans Brothers did not have the opportunity to put a close to their show of five seasons. One
of the stars of the show, Shawn Wayans made a reference to his disappointment during a
scene of the parody film, Scary Movie 2.
Maybe we haven't lost a black sitcom after all. Well, at least not right away.
