(May 13) When the news surfaced in 2007 that a new tell-all was going to hit shelves the
following year, instantly I thought here goes another Karrine "Superhead" Steffans looking for a
quick dollar. Unlike previous tell-alls that had been published within the last two years, this time
the story was being told by a man. Terrance Dean, a former MTV producer who had ravished in
numerous homosexual encounters with Hollywood and music's most elite in
Hiding In Hip Hop:
On the Down Low in the Entertainment Industry
.

So, was I getting ready to find out if my suspicions were true or false about so and so being "on
the DL" and that possibly one of my favorite actors or rappers actually played for the other
team? Yes and no. Yes, Dean was ready to set the Industry on fire with his career-torching
secrets but no because he was not revealing actual names. Dean's reps said that the people
he discussed in his book was to be so detailed that anyone with common Industry knowledge
could figure out who he was referring to.

So, the book I anticipated getting into my hands for the last year was delivered to me yesterday
via the UPS man and I could not wait to crack it up.

Dean got the ball rolling with background info but quickly went into how his sexuality came into
question. From being molested as a child to parlaying it up at DL parties and watching people
very close to him die from AIDS, Dean penned events that occurred to or around him that
shaped him into the man that he is today.

Instead of actual names, Dean gave them fictitious names to accompany his description. As far
as his descriptions go, some were so vivid that it almost left a strange taste in my mouth (no
pun intended). While he battled with his sexuality and religious beliefs, Dean along many other
Industry leaders and stars had to mask their true feelings for the same sex by parading around
with several women and keeping their down low encounters, well on the down low.

While I am encouraging readers to pick up the book and draw your own conclusions about the
people in question, I also say use
Hiding In Hip Hop by Terrance Dean as a true cautionary
tale about how some things are not as they seem and remain true to one's self. It would save a
lot of heartache in the long run.
